SAINT PAUL, MN - On June 22, 2012 Hmong Cultural Center held its annual summer picnic at Central Park in Roseville, MN. At this event attended by more than 100 community members, Hmong Cultural Center provided recognition to students who have participated the center's Adult Basic Education classes (ESL and Citizenship) as well as Qeej Instrument, Dance, and Marriage and Funeral Song classes over the past year. A traditional Hmong lunch was served and the center's Qeej and Dance Troupes shared several performances with the attendees.

A highlight of the picnic was an award presentation made to Minnesota State Representative Nora Slawik. Rep. Slawik received the center's Community Impact Award to recognize the important assistance she has provided to support Medical Waiver Citizenship classes at Hmong Cultural Center. These popular Citizenship classes help elderly and disabled Hmong refugees learn the concepts of the U.S. Citizenship exam so that they may pass the Citizenship test and become American Citizens.

Txongpao Lee, Executive Director of Hmong Cultural Center stated: "Hmong Cultural Center was very pleased to be honor Rep. Nora Slawik with our 2012 Community Impact Award. We are so grateful for her help. In part due to her assistance, Hmong Cultural Center has been able to provide Citizenship classes to large numbers of elderly and disabled Hmong over the past year. The medical waiver citizenship classes continue to have high enrollments at the center and there continues to be a strong need for these classes among older and disabled Hmong refugees."
