HND & Local Community Partners Concerned Over Defaced Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Memorial in Sheboygan, Wisconsin

From Hmong National Development, Inc.

Washington, DC - Hmong National Development, Inc. (HND), a national nonprofit organization serving the Hmong American community, along with our local community partners, the Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Memorial and the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association of Sheboygan, Inc. express deep concern and disappointment over recent acts of vandalism on one of the community's most cherished war memorials.

Damages to the Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Memorial in Sheboygan, Wisconsin were reported on Tuesday after vandals left spray-painted graffiti over the wall of the Memorial. The Memorial was created in the summer of 2006 to honor fallen Lao, Hmong and American veterans of the U.S. Secret War that took place in Laos during the Vietnam War. The graffiti has been cleaned up since Tuesday, but permanent marks remain on the Memorial.

HND, the Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Memorial and Hmong Mutual Assistance Association of Sheboygan urge the Sheboygan police to continue a thorough investigation as no arrests have been made. The Memorial was a community project that brought together law enforcement, private and public businesses and social service organizations from throughout the State of Wisconsin. Desecration of the Lao, Hmong and American Veterans War Memorial is an attack on the unity the Memorial has created.

Vue X. Yang, chairman to the Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Memorial in Sheboygan, Wisconsin states "it is too early to tell if the graffiti is the action of gang-related activity targeted at the Hmong community."

"We are still devastated that someone could bring such disrespect to a lived experience in history that is shared by the Hmong community and the greater community. The memorial represents more than what we've lost, but also how we've been able to move forward as a community" states Chasong Yang, executive director of Hmong Mutual Assistance Association of Sheboygan.

"The Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Memorial is one of a handful of memorials honoring the fallen Hmong soldiers who paved a path for many of us in this country today. We are concerned and want to ensure that similar events will not take place again. Memorials like this one hold a large significance for the local and national Hmong community" states Nou Vang, chief executive officer of Hmong National Development.

Hmong National Development, Inc. (HND) is a national, 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization. Our mission is to "build capacity, develop leadership and empower the Hmong American community."

The Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Memorial in Sheboygan, Wisconsin is the standing committee that oversees the Memorial, which honors the Lao, Hmong and American Veterans involved in the United States' Secret War in Laos during the Vietnam War from 1960-1975.

The Hmong Mutual Assistance Association of Sheboygan, Inc. (HMAAS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1980 by the Hmong community of Sheboygan. Our mission is to assist the Southeastern Asian refugees in their resettlement process in Sheboygan County and to promote opportunities that will enable refugee families to become self-sufficient.
